Reception for the Winners of the 2013 Australia-Japan Relations Essay Contest

An official reception was held in December for winners of the 2013 Australia-Japan Relations Essay Contest.
The Essay Contest was coordinated by the Embassy of Japan in Canberra and the Consulates-General of Japan throughout Australia. Students from any Australian school between Years 7 and 12 were eligible to enter, and there were three entry divisions.
Congratulations to the following Queensland entrants who received prizes for their essays.
Junior A Division
Highly commended: Ms Erika Gage (St Augustine's College)
Junior B Division
Outstanding essay prize: Mr Callum Dargavel (Brisbane Grammar School)
Senior Division
Outstanding essay prize: Mr Nikhil Dwivedi (Brisbane Grammar School)
Congratulations also to Mr Timothy Eddy from Southern Cross School in Ballina, New South Wales who received the FIrst Prize in the Junior B Division!

Japan v Korea Queensland Allstars Football Match

Japan was victorious over South Korea at the inaugural Japan v Korea Queensland Allstars Match on Saturday the 23rd of November.
A crowd of over 1000 people attended the day which commenced with an Over 30’s Japan v Korea game and children’s clinic facilitated by Brisbane Roar.
The game started at a frenetic pace with both teams denied by excellent goalkeeping. Goals by Nori Uchimura and captain Rinichi Mikami gave the Japanese team the lead at half time 2-1. A third goal was scored in the second half by Shu Kurauchi, leading the Japanese team to a win.
Consul-General Ms Yoko Yanagisawa gave an opening speech at the game and presented the trophy to the Japanese team at the conclusion of the match.
Michael Brown, CEO of the AFC Asian Cup 2015 congratulated both teams and thanked the communities for providing a great atmosphere, support and enthusiasm.
The game was a precursor to the Asian Cup 2015, at which Brisbane will host seven games. Further information about the tournament can be found at:

Welcome Home Reception for Queensland Participants of the JET Programme

An official Welcome Home Reception for Queensland Participants of the JET (Japan Exchange and Teaching) Programme was held in November. The function welcomed back participants who had returned in Queensland from August 2013 following their time on the JET Programme. Participants worked in government offices throughout Japan as either Assistrant Language Teachers (ALTs) or Coordinators for International Relations (CIRs) over the past one to five years.

Japanese Film Festival
October 16 - 20, 2013

The official opening of The 17th Japanese Film Festival, 2013, was held on Wednesday October 16, 2013, and featured an exclusive screening of the film "The Great Passage". The Japanese Film Festival ran over five days in Brisbane from October 16 to 20, and also travelled with free abridged programs to Townsville on October 26, and Cairns on November 3.
The bigger-than-ever-before festival provided a chance to "watch Japan unfold" with a variety of cinematic experiences. The event was held in capital and major cities throughout Australia and was run by The Japan Foundation, Sydney, in conjunction with the Embassy of Japan and Consulates-General of Japan around the country. In Brisbane, over ten of the latest features films and five classics were screened, including Australian premieres, award-winning dramas, latest anime titles, inspiring true stories, and big screen adaptions of popular novels.

School Visit from Narangba State School

Years 1 and 2, teachers and parents from Narangba State School visited the Consulate-General of Japan, Brisbane and enjoyed a one-hour workshop presented by Consulate staff. Students learnt Japanese culture, school life in Japan, and had the opportunity to play some traditional Japanese games such as quoits (wanage), daruma otoshi and spinning tops (koma).
