Message from the Head of Consular Office
My name is HIGASHIMOTO Shingo and I arrived in Cairns on March 18th, 2025, assuming the duties of the Head of the Consular Office of Japan.
Cairns area is renowned for its stunning maritime scenery and boasts two World Heritage Sites side-by-side. I am both honoured and delighted to be assigned to Cairns.
In Cairns, as in other parts of Australia, there is a long history of close ties and deep mutual understanding between Australia and Japan. These connections are not limited to one sector but stretch across a wide variety of fields, including Education, Culture, the Arts and Economy.
Through the activities of various public and private institutions and the dedicated efforts of community organisations and individuals, challenges have been overcome and a strong foundation of mutual respect has been established.
As a newcomer, I have been impressed by the warmth of the people here in Cairns.
I have spent my long diplomatic career in the Asia-Pacific region, in locations such as Indonesia and East Timor. I have benefited greatly from serving alongside Australian overseas establishments, which are so prominent in the region.
On a number of occasions I have worked collaboratively with my Australian counterparts, and these experiences have provided me with valuable opportunities to learn more about Australia.
As likeminded nations in the region, cooperative ties between Australia and Japan continue to intensify. I look forward to working with everyone who has helped to foster our friendly relationship and am eager to discuss how we can advance our various collaborations further.
Lastly, I would like to highlight the importance we give to the safety of Japanese citizens. Priority is given to providing Japanese citizens with helpful information and the necessary services that support them.
