Message from Consul-General ISHIKAWA on the 50th Anniversary of the Signing of the Japan-Australia Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation

On 16th June, fifty years ago, the Japan-Australia Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation was signed in Tokyo. This year also auspiciously marks the commemoration of the 130th anniversary since Japan inaugurated its first consulate on Australian soil in the city of Townsville, as well as the 60th anniversary of the opening of the (then) consulate here in Brisbane. As these milestones remind us, over many years Japan-Queensland relations have deepened bonds among governments, businesses, cultural organisations, educational and research institutions, young people, and our communities.

It is with profound gratification that I observe the deepening friendship and vigorous co-operation that continue to flourish in Queensland. On this momentous occasion, I would like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to all those whose dedication and endeavours have so nobly contributed to the flourishing friendship we now cherish.

At the same time, I firmly believe that beyond the realms of natural resources, energy, agriculture and tourism, abundant prospective opportunities lie ahead in education, study-abroad initiatives, sport, cultural exchanges and working holiday exchanges, right here in Queensland. It goes without saying that our mutual understanding rests in the vibrant and continual exchange among our peoples in various fields. The Consulate-General of Japan in Brisbane shall remain unwavering in its commitment to its endeavours to further enhance Japan’s standing in Queensland.

During Prime Minister Takaichi’s visit to Australia in May, the two leaders expressed their resolve to elevate the ‘special strategic partnership’ between Japan and Australia to a higher level. With an eye towards the next fifty years, the Consulate-General of Japan in Brisbane stands resolutely dedicated to the further enhancement of our bilateral ties. Most recently, in the gracious presence of the Premier of Queensland, we reaffirmed our steadfast co-operation with the Queensland Parliamentary Friends of Japan Group, and we shall continue to work in close concert with the people of Queensland in this noble endeavour.

ISHIKAWA Katsutoshi
Consul-General of Japan in Brisbane
