Emperor’s Birthday Reception 2017

On November 30th in Cairns, the Consul-General of Japan in Brisbane, Ms Keiko Yanai hosted a reception in celebration of the birthday His Majesty the Emperor of Japan. This year’s reception was well attended. Attending guests included consular officials, local government, tourism, education and private sector representatives. Consul-General Yanai spoke on the importance of the Japan-Queensland relationship and the growing emphasis on developing opportunities in sectors such as infrastructure, agriculture, tourism, education and health service. Guest of honour Councillor Manning, Mayor of the Cairns Regional Council, gave an address highlighting the importance of the Sister city arrangements between Japan’s Minami and Oyama cities and Cairns. He also made mention of the recent resurgence in Japanese tourist visitor numbers to Cairns.

The ballroom where the event was staged took on a Japanese flavour for the evening, with a lively performance from the Cairns based, Yosakoi dance group ‘FUN’, a traditional bridal kimono exhibit and a Japan travel presentation by local Travel Agent ‘HIS’.
 
 

Cairns Bon-Odori Dance Festival

On 3 Sept, the fourth Cairns Bon-Odori Dance Festival, hosted by this Office and the Japanese Society of Cairns, was held as the last event of Cairns Festival.
During the event, Ms. Keiko Yanai, Consul-General of Japan in Brisbane, and Cnr. Bob Manning, Mayor of Cairns, made speeches and performed Mochi-tsuki, a traditional rice-cake making performance, which is commonly associated with Japanese festivals.

Two Japanese Language Speech Competitions

Japanese Language Speech Competitions were held on 28 Jul in Townsville and on 10 Aug in Cairns. Both of them were organised by Japanese Language Teachers in each city respectively. From this office, Mrs Keiko HOLMES, officer of The Cairns, also participated as a judge.
 

Visits by young delegations from two Japanese sister cities of Cairns, Oyama and Minami

This office received two student deligations from Minami Town (on 18 Aug) and Oyama City (on 21 Aug),Japan, both of which are sister cities of Cairns. The picture shows the teachers and high school students from Minami and school teachers from Oyama. The students from Minami and Oyama were about starting their week-long home stay as well.
