Culture and Education > Programmes & Scholarships > Japan Exchange & Teaching (JET) Programme

Each year the government of Japan accepts applications from young Australian university graduates (in principle under 40) who would like to spend at least one year in Japan under a highly successful international exchange program.

Aim: The JET Programme is designed to promote mutual understanding between Japan and other nations, foster international perspectives at local levels, and intensify English language education in Japan.

There are two types of positions:

ALT (Assistant Language Teacher): Those engaged in English instruction, mainly in public schools or local boards of education. (No Japanese proficiency required for ALT positions.)
CIR (Co-ordinator for International Relations): Those engaged in international activities in local government offices. (Japanese proficiency required for CIR positions only.)

Conditions: Contracts are for one year, however, can be renewed for a period of up to 3 years, commencing in late July 2010. Remuneration and travel expenses are paid by the contracting organisations.
